Homework Tips

Reading:

It is lovely to see so many of the children enjoying reading this year in 2nd class. When you are listening to their reading, it would be great to use this as an opportunity to develop their fluency and expression. For example, help them to stop and take a breath at full stops or comas and to change their intonation for question and exclamation marks!

Take 5 minutes after reading the assigned homework to ask them questions from their colour coded bookmark. Chose one question from each coloured box to extend their comprehension of the text. This will check that your child understands what they are reading. These bookmarks will either be in their homework folders or in their readers.

If your child is keen to read more than the assigned amount of homework pages, encourage them to choose their own reading material from the school, local library or e-books. It is also wonderful practice if they can read to younger family members.

Once your child finishes a story, you can check their understanding using the following questions:

  • What happened in this story (events in the correct order)?
  • What was the problem in this story?
  • How did the character feel when..?
  • Does this story remind you of another book you read or an event in your life? (Encourage your child to make connections to their own life)

Maths:

At the moment we have been working on our doubles and near doubles addition (0-12). We have also been working on our halves (2-24). It would be very beneficial to practice these at home. The children may even enjoy asking you your doubles, near doubles and halves to see if you get them all right!

HIT THE BUTTON have a doubles and halves game that the children are very familiar with! The link can be found in the ‘subject resource’ section of our blog.

Handwriting:

We have been working lots on our handwriting. Please encourage your child to use their beautiful handwriting as they complete their homework activities. Most of the children are using joint writing in school, so it would be great to see this reflected in their homework. This is the template we use in school if they are unsure how to form one of the letters.
